According to a statement released ahead of Garmin’s Q2 earnings call, the company says it will be delaying the release of its Nuvifone from late 2008 until the first half of 2009.

The planned shipment date of the
Garmin nüvifone has been delayed with six months. It’s current release date is planned for the first half of 2009, meaning we can most probably expect to see the first copies on the market in a year or so at earliest. Personally I’m not too surprised about this, going from a GPS unit to a phone is not a small task, especially considering current competing phones such as the iPhone 3G or the HTC Touch Diamond.

In Mac OS X 10.5 it is now possible to mount the virtual disk of a powered off Windows virtual machine using VMDKMounter. This allows access to files without actually starting the virtual machine.

Today VMware released beta 2 of their upcoming version 2 of VMware Fusion. If you don’t know what this is - it is a way to run Windows on your Mac without restarting your machine. I use it every single day to run Office 2007 since I need features not found in Office 2008 for Mac, so I am quite thrilled about the many new features VMware have introduced in beta 2 of Fusion 2.

With the iPhone 2.0 being available for over a week now I’m starting to get questions from customers about how it compares with a Windows Mobile device for Push Email with Exchange. Jason Langridge’s weblog
As I have myself
previously reported there are quite a lot of differences between Windows Mobile and the iPhone when it comes to support for the Microsoft Exchange protocol. Jason Langridge has listed even more differences
on his weblog. Worth a read if you are considering moving from Windows Mobile to the iPhone.
Personally I will keep using my HTC Touch Diamond as my main device with
Pocket Informant for calendaring until I can at least invite other people to meetings added on my device.
At first when I used XCode 3.1 I found it less than desirable. But as I explored its settings, documentation, and other areas I found that I really loved working in it. My Cocoa dev that has been working in XCode for years was surprised at the things I found. Right now I give the XCode editor very high marks and I greatly prefer it over Visual Studio.

If you like me are using
Pocket Informant on Window Mobile for calendar managing, you might already be aware that there is also an
iPhone version of Pocket Informant in development. If you are curious about the process of moving Windows Mobile software to the iPhone there are some nice details in the brief interview with Alex Kac over at

“Judging by the leaked screenshot the main changes to the functionality and user interface includes addition of three large thumb friendly toolbar buttons optimized for finger controls while the rest of the UI remains unchanged and will probably require stylus for proper manipulating.”

Screenshots from the upcoming
5th edition of the Symbian S60 platform (also known as “S60 Touch UI”) have now been released on the web. Still quite a long shot from the slick iPhone UI, but who knows what it will look like in a year or so once the core foundation has been finalized.

GearLive reports that the firmware update contains new GPS-related functionality, including tracking speed and direction. MacRumors indicates that there is also preliminary support for push notification services, which Scott Forstall discussed during the WWDC keynote in June.

If you are one of those that paid $99 for an iPhone developer license you should now be able to download the new iPhone 2.1 firmware. New features include support for the revolutionary new Apple push service and improved GPS functionality. The iPhone 2.1 firmware should be publicly available by September.
Me and my family went on a brief vacation to the deep forests of Dalsland in Sweden. Imagine my surprise when I couldn’t find a single mobile network connection - and I even brought with me SIM cards from three different operators!
So the news I will post in the next few days might be up to a week old while I try to catch up with the hundreds of news in my RSS readers.

Roustem and Dan have been burning the midnight oil for the last month making 1Password for iPhone amazing and we just submitted it to the App Store. Once Apple approves our submission 1Password will be added to the App Store.

1Password, my favorite password vault application for the Mac, will be coming for the iPhone in just a few days. It supports password synchronization over the local network with your stationary Mac, and overall looks like a true top notch application for the iPhone.
For a limited time we have decided to give away the iPhone/iPod touch of 1Password for FREE!! We know we could have charged a lot for the iPhone version of 1Password, but we also know 1Password is needed by every Mac user and we are trying to remove as many barriers as possible to make this happen.
1Password for the iPhone should be out on the AppStore by the end of July.

I was making some changes this week in Control Panel and my machine and could hardly believe my eyes when I saw that new entry at the bottom – Apple’s MobileMe. Where the hell did that come from?

MobileMe sneaks in to Vista
Apparently Apple now installs the MobileMe control panel with every iTunes and Safari installation on PC computers. I had to check it out on my PC as well, and yes there it was. For me personally it is not a big issue since I use MobileMe and can now keep my Safari bookmarks in sync between my PC and my Mac, but for all others that are even reluctant on installing iTunes in the first place it might put them off big time.
