Mobile First?

If you like me visited Mobile World Congress in February you probably remember when Eric Schmidt proclaimed that all new Google technologies are now “Mobile First”. Eric said that from now on Google will always develop new technologies for mobile devices first, with stationary versions coming out simultaneously or slightly after the mobile version. This is what the Official Google Mobile Blog announced in February 2010:

“Clearly, the mobile phone is the iconic device of the moment, and we’re encouraging a new rule: Mobile First. When we announce new services for desktop computers, such as real-time search, we will debut an equally powerful mobile version.”

Yesterday Google launched their new search service “Google Instant” for stationary PC’s with mobile versions to be launched in the “coming weeks and months”.

“As part of our current rollout, Google Instant will become the core search experience on Google.com for Chrome, Firefox, Safari and IE 8. We’ll also be offering Google Instant to our users in France, Germany, Italy, Russia, Spain and the U.K. who are signed in and have Instant-capable browsers. Over the coming weeks and months, we’ll work to roll out Google Instant to all geographies and platforms.”

It only took six months for the rule “Mobile First” to become “Mobile Last”.

iPhone User Statistics

Quite often I get questions relating to the average iPhone user, such as “What’s the average age of an iPhone user”, “What’s the download ratio between paid and free apps”, and “How many applications does a user download by average per month?”

Admob’s recent Mobile Metrics Report answers these questions and much more. Below I have pasted in the five graphs I found the most interesting. In summary:

  • Android is mostly used by men aged around 30 years. 80% of all Android users do not buy applications on a regular basis.
  • iPhones are used equally by men and women in all ages. 50% of all iPhone users buy one or more applications each month.
  • iPhone users are very happy with their devices. 91% of all iPhone users would recommend it to others.

Intense Schedule At Mobile World Congress

The past few days have been full of non-stop action for me at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

On the first day I walked around every square meter of the exhibition and saw some fantastic innovations! Yesterday I participated in mobile seminars the entire day between 9AM and 7PM, with the last seminar held by Eric Schmidt, CEO at Google.

Today there’s another full day of seminars. Speakers include Daniel Ek, founder of Spotify, Nick Rhodes from Duran Duran, and Cecilia Atterwall, Head of ConsumerLab, Ericsson. Looks promising!

I have taken literally hundreds of pictures, and written hundreds of lines of comments from all the seminars. With dual batteries I managed to get 10 hours of battery life from the Thinkpad, so I could enter my notes directly into Evernote. I’ll try to post a conference recap tonight if I don’t get hijacked into some unplanned event.
